Ah the good old waving of our national flags, cheerful jubilee, mutual agreement and a bonding session based on community whilst in a political sitting. It almost sounds like some sort of Utopian society- politics and the people merged into one. Yet what you are about to see has very little to do with actual national pride, nor is it a party that commemorates the beauty of what we have or who we are, but it is simply an opportunity to bash and cause an irrational fear of the “others” – whether it be immigrants, multiculturalism or religion (most commonly Islam). Such events are nothing but mobs in a pack mentality that wear the guise of “national pride” but quiet overtly show their true colours.
Let us take the latest head popping into Australian Politics. A political group called “Rise Up Australia”. This group is strictly Anti-Immigration, Anti- Multiculturalism and Anti-Islamic. Funnily enough the man behind such a party is not your expected Caucasian flag bearing patriot- it is a Migrant himself- Pastor Danny Nalliah from Sri Lanka. His following is approaching 2,000. Whilst Danny Nalliah talks about the ills of immigration, and his anti-multicultural stance alongside his promise to keep “Australia- Australian” we hear wild cheers from his crowd of supporters. At the post Interview with crowd followers of Danny’s latest speech (February 2013) these fearful elders would make statements like “I Don’t want no Sharia here” and “If we’re not careful were going to lose this country” .Meanwhile these supporters are so caught up on his Anti immigration and Anti-Islamic policies that they tend to not see Pastor Danny’s own extreme viewpoints and “experiences”.
Pastor Danny has claimed that God himself talks to him- even i as a rather devout believer would never make such a statement. Pastor Danny then made a shock statement in 2009. The Victorian Black Saturday bushfires which caused mass destruction and havoc in Australias south were blamed on “Australias support on Abortion”– according to Danny. He was quoted as saying ““That His (Gods) conditional protection has been removed from the nation of Australia, in particular Victoria, for approving the slaughter of innocent children in the womb.”
Pastor Danny also has quiet a few things to say to Australias first female and Atheist Prime Minister– he reports that she is a “Heathen- living in sin“. He also makes the popular statement on generalizing Muslims by stating that “If they follow the Quran, they are extremists“. Essentially what Pastor Danny is doing is he is himself trying to implement religion alongside politics, in the interim he calls another faith (Islam) evil and incompatible with Australia and it’s freedoms and caters that it is a “political ideology” – all in the while he says such things with a Bible in his hand. Funny that- who is the totalitarian that can’t separate church and state now?
Moving forward the green light has finally been given to Dutch politician Geert Wilders to enter Australia. The peroxided blond spokesman who is a far-right politician and the founder/ leader of the “Party for Freedom”, the fourth-largest political party in the Netherlands. This is also a man that is centred amongst controversy and the fact it took so long to approve his visit based on his “hate speech” may say a lot about this shady character. Geert Wilders is all about the “protection” of Europe and stridently attempts to warn other Western Nations of the dangers of Islam. Yet during his speeches he often praises Europes “Judeo-Christian and humanist” roots, forming an alliance of the Judeo Christian ideals and segregating Islam to some naughty corner. His political power has a certain amount of sway and the fact that even 10% of the Dutch are happy for him to gain power is disturbing enough.
Geert Wilders has been caught red-handed many times uttering many extreme things, but he proudly claims he is just “telling the truth“. In September of 2009 Geert Wilders stated Any Muslim woman who wants to wear a headscarf in his country – which he described as a ‘head-rag’ – would have to apply for a license, and pay one thousand (1,000) Euros for the privilege. How interesting that a man that wants to protect the “rights” of woman, openly calls for them to be taxed when they (for the most part) decide what they want to wear.
In 2007 Geert Wilders made the statement that “The Koran is a facist book which incites violence That is why this book, just like Mein Kampf, must be banned.” Some pretty moderate words there, he want’s to “Ban” a book because it “incites Violence”? He might want to re-read the Book, the majority of the violence in the Quran is defensive- bar only a few- which were attempts at the expansion of the Islamic Empire that was surrounded by the Persian Sassanids and the Byzantines. Also he might want to look at the Bible while he is at it.
According to the 2011 book “Laying Down the Sword” by Phillip Jenkins a professor on the Historical Studies of Religion at Cambridge explores the violent verses of the Bible and the Quran and Jenkins came to the conclusion that by a margin of about 7 to 1, the Bible itself preaches more violence than the Quran does.
Jenkins continues “The Bible contains far more verses praising or urging bloodshed than does the Koran, and biblical violence is often far more extreme, and marked by more indiscriminate savagery. Commands to kill, to commit ethnic cleansing, to institutionalize segregation, to hate and fear other races and religions . . . all are in the Bible, and occur with a far greater frequency than in the Koran.”
I hope Mr. Geert Wilders has his banning pants on, there’s much banning to be done, but unfortunately what Wilders does is romanticize the Jude-Christian historicity of Europe and puts it side by side with Humanism. That doesn’t quiet work- nor does it make his “truths” any more consistent. The biggest Irony about “Mein Kampf” is Wilders might find he has a lot more in common with it than the Quran does. According to Hitlers manifesto It wasn’t the people but the “the code of Jewish ethics,” the well-documented desire of Jewish believers to take over countries and industries and societies. Judaism wasn’t another religion but an ideology- And it was the terrorism and violence that Judaic beliefs always seemed to bring to societies. The exact same rhetoric he uses against Muslims today.
This is not to say that every group has their bad eggs and in different parts of the world it is different groups. Indeed in some places in Europe some Migrants do have a slightly higher crime rate, but they also are at the lower end of the socio-economic pool. Do other things to counter such things than to “ban” people or to “send them back to where they came from”. Geert Wilders even claims if they were born in the Netherlands they should still be sent “back” to Morocco. Such wishful thinking of exiling others simply runs contrary to any democracy.
Finally comes the Statement from “New Zealand First” MP Richard Prosser who launched an attack on Muslims, saying they should be banned from flying because they could be terrorists. He made the comments in his Investigate magazine column, citing most terrorists as “angry young Muslim men who hate the West. They attack us, our institutions and infrastructures, and our way life, and our values and beliefs and perceptions because we are not alike,” says Mr Prosser. He is calling for Muslim men to be banned from flying in aircraft flown by Western countries.
